The Sluice
Along Nugget Alley, the process of mining has not changed much in over a century. In this photograph, a miner pours a bucket of the rock/sand/soil that lies at the bottom of the river into a sluice. Angled to catch the river's current, the device uses water to push through the lighter stones, while the gold and heavier black sand are left behind in its "riffles". Later, he will remove the larger gold "pickers" — so named because they can be picked out by hand — and then use a pan to tease out the finer gold particles.
