Sir Alec Issigonis, designer of the Mini, wanted a vehicle which could comfortably seat four passengers despite being only ten feet long. He wanted 80% free space inside and radically introduced a transversly placed engine. For the record, 66 people is the most that have apparently fit in a Mini.
