After Nixon resigned, Ford quickly pardoned his former boss, a controversial and unpopular move at the time. It did, however, help put the Watergate scandal behind the country. A star football player in college, Ford gained a reputation for clumsiness as President, after he was caught on film stumbling and bumping his head on a plane door, among other pratfalls. And in a sign of the Republican's dogged opposition to a Democrat-controlled Congress, he issued more than 50 vetoes in less than three years.
