Though she was an icon in her own lifetime and a legend after her death, there is very little artistic evidence to provide a clear picture of what Cleopatra VII looked like. Few contemporary images of her survive. Scholars believe that some of the best representations can be found on coins minted in Alexandria during her lifetime, where she is portrayed with a smile and a hooked nose, in the manner of the relief, above.
