The first rappers to sell a million records did so in part by having ambitions beyond their genre. They looked tough and were pioneering rhymers, but they also recorded one of the great modern Christmas songs ("Christmas in Hollis"), broke down the rock-rap wall with Aerosmith and made some of the savviest marketing moves ("My Adidas") of any band in history.
