A double sided processional cross, 1250AD
Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa

True Faith
This double-sided cross, from 1250 AD, would have been used in one of the processions that were a regular feture of church life. As members of the Christian Roman Empire, the Byzantines saw themselves as representing the culmination of civilization on the planet. The Emperor was viewed as Christ's representative on earth and the church promoted what it regarded as the 'true faith'.
