Twain has written "Be Good and you will be lonesome" beneath this image of himself relaxing on the deck of a ship. At one point in his youth, the author worked as a Mississippi steamboat pilot. In the jargon of river men, "Mark Twain" denotes a depth of two fathoms, or 12 feet.
