Master of the Modern

shulman modernism

Stahl Residence, Los Angeles, 1960
Architect: Pierre Koenig
It's angular. It's airborne. Shulman's image of the Stahl house is his best known picture and one of the defining images of early 60s L.A. Modernist cool. Glass walled and daringly cantilevered, it was one of the famous Case Study Houses, more than two dozen experiments in residential design commissioned by Arts & Architecture magazine between 1945 and 1966. Richard Neutra, Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames were among the famous designers who took part.
