Mummy from Pompeii
Pompeii was covered by 4m of ash after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Suffocated by volcanic gasses and covered in ash and debris, bodies eventually decayed inside the hardening matter. This air space was filled with plaster by excavators to create a mold of a body.
