A Diana doll from the Franklin Mint retails for $195. After Princess Diana died in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997, mementoes hit the market, from ashtrays to wax busts. Some were considered of questionable taste, leading then-Prime Minister Tony Blair to call the Diana Industry "inappropriate and tacky." Nevertheless, in 1999 the British Patent Office rejected an attempt by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund to trademark her image. That opened the floodgates for Diana-related merchandise around the world.
