March 10, 2005: After weeks of rumors, Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa abruptly resigns, citing his declining health. Many believe, however, that the 2003 protests against his administration eroded Beijing's confidence in his ability to keep the territory stable. Hong Kong's second-highest official, Chief Secretary Donald Tsang, is tapped to fill out Tung's remaining two years in office.
