Origins
Born in 1964 to Evangelical Catholics, Savage at one point studied to become a priest. He began doubting the church's views on topics from homosexuality to the virgin birth and by the age of 15, had dropped out of the seminary. When he was 18, he outed himself and his mother, who seemed fine about the revelation, cracked a little joke, but then panicked the next day and summoned a priest. She told the priest about her son, and the priest in turn came out to her too. He told her that it was better for Dan to live an openly gay life.
