Principle Researcher
David Ferrucci, the senior manager of IBM's Semantic Analysis and Integration department took the challenge to develop Watson. During the computer's initial test in 2006, Watson was given 500 clues from past Jeopardy! programs. While human competitors buzzed in half the time and responded correctly to 95% of clues, Watson could only manage to get 15% correct. By 2008, the development team had advanced Watson to the point it could compete with Jeopardy! champions and by 2010 it was beating contestants on a regular basis.
