As Wikipedia's public profile grew, Wales' role evolved from co-founder to site promoter and spokesman. In 2003, he set up the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), a non-profit organization whose purpose is to establish general policy for the encyclopdia and its sister projects. Wales' work for the foundation includes apperances to promote it at computer and educational conferences.
