In 1999, Rove joined Bush's presidential bid as his chief strategist. But before he could join the campaign, Bush required that Rove sell off his successful direct mail consulting firm. (Presumably to have the strategist's undivided attention.) Rove's brand of controversial campaigning helped George W. Bush become the country's 43rd president.
