Iran
In his last years as IAEA Director, ElBaradei shifted his attention to Iran, where he tried to broker a compromise between the United States and the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In February 2006, the United States rejected a proposal whereby Iran would limit its enrichment program, in exchange for permission to import nuclear fuel from Russia.
