MIAMI: The husband-and-wife legal team of Stanley and Susan Rosenblatt were the big winners Friday, as Big Tobacco settled its first-ever courtroom battle over secondhand smoke. The industry paid the plaintiffs’ legal costs, and gave $300 million to bankroll a foundation that will research their illnesses.

In other words, the flight attendants who sued get vindication, but no cash; the Rosenblatts score a cool $46 million.

It was the first time the industry had settled a suit brought by individuals. The plaintiffs expressed satisfaction. The industry said common sense had prevailed and that the settlement was in line with the comprehensive national deal currently under review. And not surprisingly, Stanley Rosenblatt said he felt “very, very good about it.”
