WASHINGTON, D.C.: Although Madeleine Albright is allowing a 10-year ban on visits to Lebanon by Americans to expire, the State Department stressed today that it's still unsafe to travel in the country. Officials said U.S. citizens who go to Lebanon despite the warning "should exercise extreme caution and avoid traveling in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Bekaa valley and southern Lebanon." Still, ending the ban imposed amid hostage-taking of U.S. citizens during Lebanon's civil war is an important step for a country hoping to return American tourism and investment to what was once the financial center of the Arab world.
