NEW YORK: Bob Dylan has been hospitalized with a potentially fatal viral infection that threatens his heart, Columbia Records said Wednesday. The statement said Dylan had been diagnosed with histoplasmosis, a fungal infection that causes swelling of the sac surrounding the heart. Dylan was admitted over the weekend with severe chest pains after celebrating his 56th birthday on Saturday. The record company said he is "undergoing treatment, and will remain hospitalized in the care of his physicians until such time as they feel confident that his condition has improved." Spokesmen for Dylan and his record label were not saying where Dylan was hospitalized, nor did they characterize his prognosis.
