Christopher Makes Progress In Beijing

BEIJING: Warren Christopher called his first visit to Beijing in 2 1/2 years "probably the most coming-to-grips discussion that we've had of human rights issues for some time, maybe the most of all." It was a far cry from the last visit, where police rounded up dissidents while government spokesmen gave menacing lectures against meddling in the nation's domestic affairs. This time, Christopher did some posturing of his own. "History shows that nations with accountable governments and open societies make for better neighbors," he told 300 Chinese and American students and teachers at Fudan University.
