The Dow Jones industrials rose 3.33 to 5,652.78. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 10-to-9 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, on a low volume of just 298.33 million shares as of 4 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 0.69 to 665.16, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 5.54 to 1,207.64. The American Stock Exchange's market value index fell 3.32 to 590.53. And in London, gold rose $0.75 to $385.00.
