The Dow Jones industrial average fell 19.21 to finish at 5,668.66 after early gains of nearly 41 points. Declining issues narrowly led advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume totaled 401.05 million shares as of 4 p.m. The S&P's index fell 1.20 to 670.96, and the American Stock Exchange's market value index fell 1.91 to 597.57. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite index rose 0.72 to end the day at 1,230.76. And in London, gold finished down $2 at $384.25.
