California, Here He Comes

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Even though he's not exactly welcome, President Clinton said Friday he still intends to visit San Francisco this weekend. Mayor Willie Brown had advised Clinton against a trip to the city, in the face of furious protests by gay groups over the President's support of a pending Republican bill opposing same-sex marriages. Clinton's opposition to same-sex marriages, combined with his earlier compromise on a promise to allow gays in the military, has alienated a voting block which supported him heavily in 1992. Does he care? By going to San Francisco now, Clinton may believe that he will win more conservative votes than those he will lose. -->
