WASHINGTON ,D.C.: Elections are a game of much higher stakes in nascent democracies, where a fall from power means more than just retiring to write your memoirs. With Russian elections fast approaching, Boris Yeltsin's advisors have begun to worry that a Yeltsin loss could prove costly. Fears of retribution by an incoming Communist administration have led close Yeltsin aide Aleksander Korzhakov to call Sunday for a postponement of elections. "Korzhakov was rebuked by Yeltsin, who said Tuesday that the elections will be held," reports TIME's Bruce Nelan. "Understandably, Yeltsin's close allies are afraid that if he loses the presidency they will be prime targets of the next regime, Korzhakov most of all."
