The Dow Jones industrial average rose 50.58 to close at 5,637.72. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by about 3 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume totaled 390.24 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE's composite index rose 4.02 to 350.94, while the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 8.23 653.73, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 5.17 to 1,106.57. In London, gold finished at $394.85, down $1.70.
