The Dow Jones industrial average fell 43.71 to 5587.14 today. Trading was heavier totaling 413.01 million shares as of 4 p.m., vs. 368.29 million in the previous session. The NYSE's composite index fell 1.36 points to 346.92. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 3.44 to 645.50. The Nasdaq composite index rose 9.58 to 1,104.41. The AMEX market value index rose 5.23 to 571.38. In London, gold closed at $396.55 off $1.50.
