Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a slim margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with a volume of 438.33 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE's composite index fell 0.23 to 348.55; the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 0.96 to 651.69. The Nasdaq composite index fell 1.92 to 1,112.50, and the American Stock Exchange's market value index fell 0.21 to 564.57. And in London, gold finished up $0.25 at $395.25.
