The Dow Jones industrial average soared 98.63 points to close at a record 5,683.60. Advancing issues led decliners by 7 to 3 on the New York Stock Exchange on a volume was moderately heavy at 436.58 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE's composite index rose 5.39 to 348.78. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 11.22 to 652.65. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14.22 to 1,113.81, while the American Stock Exchange closed up 3.27 at 564.78. And in London, gold finished down $0.45 at $395.00.
