The Dow Jones industrial average closed at a near-record 5,641.69, up 11.92. Declining issues narrowly lead advancers on the New York Stock Exchange on a heavy volume of 425.74 million shares as of 4 pm. The S & P's 500 index rose 1.65 to 653.65, while the Nasdaq rose 1.30 to 1,093.12. In London, gold finished at $394.10, up $0..25.
