The Dow Jones industrial average had another volatile session ending up 42.27 at 5,642.42, topping a record high of 5,630.49 set on Feb. 23. Trading was heavy at a revised 435.28 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE's composite index rose 1.88 to 350.75, the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 4.98 to 655.79, the Nasdaq composite index rose 11.93 to 1,096.81, and the American Stock Exchange's market value index rose 2.11 to 569.15. In London, gold closed $393.25 off $0.25.
