The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 3.69 to 348.87, with 17,240,800 shares traded as of 4 p.m. The Standard & Poors 500 Index climbed 6.44 to 650.81, while the Nasdaq Composite Index fell1.20 to1,084.88. In London, gold closed at $393.50, falling $5.45.
