Volume was relatively heavy at 448.25 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE composite index fell 1.82 to 342.80. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index declined 4.31 to 640.44, the Nasdaq composite index dropped 7.50 to 1,100.05, and the AMEX market value index lost 4.66 to finish at 562.00. In London, gold closed at $400.55, up $2.90.
