The Dow Jones industrial average was down Wednesday, closing 43.00 points lower at 5,506.21. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancers slightly led decliners on a heavy volume of 447.05 shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE composite index fell 0.97 to 344.62, while the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index declined 2.49 to 644.75. On the Nasdaq, stocks were up 1.38 to close at 1,107.55. In London, gold finished down $1.40 at $397.65.
