The Dow Jones industrial average rallied late to end the day in the positive column. The Dow closed up 9.76 to end the day at 5,405.06. The New York Stock Exchange composite index gained 1.20 to finish the day at 341.23. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners 1,407 to 1,025, with 670 unchanged. Volume was heavy, with 458.74 million shares traded.. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 8.06 to close at 1,067.85. The Standard and Poor's 500 stocks gained 2.38 to close at 638.40. The American Stock Exchange market value index rose 1.58 to 555 .68. In London, gold closed at $410.35, up $4.90.
