Stocks surged into record territory Monday, as the Dow Jones industrial average gained 34.68 points to end the day at 5,219.36. The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 0.84 to close at 328.70. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners 1,225 to 1,104 with 704 unchanged. Volume was moderate, with 396 million shares trades. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index added 10.03 to close at 1,028.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks gained 1.57 to close at 613.40. The American Stock Exchange market value index closed up 1.09 to 531.71. In London, gold shot up $2.40 to close at $402.15.
