THE MARKETS

All major market indices were up slightly goign into the long holiday weekend. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.44 to 5,097.96. The New York Stock Exchange composite index rose 0.74 to 326.35. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners 1,369 to 953, with 768 unchanged. Volume was light with 289.61 million shares traded. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 4.20 to 1,044.84. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks were up 1.47 to end the day at 611.96. The American Stock Exchange market value index was up 4.06 to 541.55. According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.44 to 5,097.96. In London, gold closed at $387.60, off $0.20. Photographs:
