Stocks surged on signs that progress is being made in restarting budget talks between the White House and Congress, pushing the Dow Jones industrial average up 37.21 points to end the day at 5,096.53. All other major market indices were up as well, with the New York Stock Exchange composite index up 2.00 to close at 325.61. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners 1,414 to 953 with 738 unchanged. Volume was moderate with 415.78 million shares traded. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose sharply, 13.94 to close at 1,039.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks rose 4.54 to 610.48. The American Stock Exchange market value index was up 2.99 to close at 537.49. In London, gold closed at $387.80, off five cents. Photographs:
