Ohio State running back Eddie George won the Heisman trophy Saturday, beating back a strong challenge from quarterbacks Tommie Frazier of Nebraska and Danny Wuerffel of Florida. TIME sportswriter Steve Wulf says that although all three had stellar college careers, the Heisman is hardly a predictor of professional success. "The last Heisman winner to have a good pro career was Barry Sanders in 1988," says Wulf. "The award recognizes the person who had the best year as a college football player."
