THE MARKETS

After initially losing as much as 37 points, a technology stock rally pushed the Dow Jones industrial average to a fifth straight record closing. The Dow closed up 7.22 to finish at 5,078.10. The New York Stock Exchange composite index also closed with a record high, up 1.76 to close at 322.99. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners, 1,249 to 1,047. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index was up 20.73, closing at 1050.05. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks finished the day at 606.45, up 5.13. The American Stock Exchange market value index was down 0.12, to end the day at 530.74 . In London, gold closed at $388.55, up $3.50.
