The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 5,023.55, an advance of 40.46. The New York Stock Exchange was also up Tuesday, closing at 320.23, up 1.31. On the Big Board, decliners led advancers 1,287 to 1,035 with 764 unchanged. Volume was heavy with 405.85 million shares traded. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 6.26 to close at 1,023.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks rose 3.41 to 600.26. The American Stock Exchange market value index was down 3.04 to close at 528.55. In London, gold closed at $386.25, down $0.20.
