Four straight sessions of record highs ended Tuesday as the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 1.09 to 4,871.81. Declining issues led advances, 1,322 to 930 on a volume of 353 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq Composite index fell 17.84 points to close at 1,040.62, while the Standard & Poor's 500 also declined, falling 3.01 points to 589.29. London gold closed lower as well, at $385.75 a drop of $2.25.
