The Dow Jones Industrial average plunged 39.28 to 4,755.48 in a broad sell-off of stocks and bonds. The New York Stock exchange composite index dropped 1.51 to 312.32. On the Big Board, decliners led advancers1,507 to 770 on moderate volume of 329.7 million shares traded. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index was down as well, 3.59 to 1,035.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks were down 2.41 to 585.05. The American Stock Exchange's market value index fell 6.51 to 525.16. In London, gold was up $0.90 to $382.75.
