THE OTHER MILLION MAN MARCH

Farrakhan has repeatedly compared the march to a Washington rally being planned by Promise Keepers, a Christian men's organization and the fastest-growing movement in U.S. history. TIME's Richard Ostling reports that Promise Keepers has postponed its event till after the 1996 elections to avoid any political implications. "Promise Keepers is radically different from the Farrakahan movement. Both are religiously-based movements advocating for-men-only meeting strategy, and both target men's responsibility for U.S. family disintegration. But Promise Keepers shuns Farrakhan-style politics. Given its track record, there's little doubt that it has the ability to draw something close to a million males (of all races) to Washington in 1997."
