USAir, still suffering from a streak of crashes last year that helped undermine public confidence, today announced it is seeking a merger with United Airlines or American. Despite a rebound this summer, the carrier, one of the largest U.S. airlines, has been unable to curb costs or offset losses it incurred slashing fares in an effort to increase its market share. A spokesman for United airlines confirmed that there have been discussions about a possible alliance.
