Privacy Critics Slam Project Backed by White House, AOL and Microsoft

The cover story in this month's print issue of TIME Digital makes a big deal about so-called E.T. programs such as PKZip that phone home from your computer without ever asking permission. Clearly the spying is wrong the programs don't even tell you what they're doing, much less ask if you mind but what if your web browsing program knew how to manage your Internet privacy, sharing information with trusted computers and holding back from questionable sites?

This kind of automated privacy protection is the rough idea behind the Platform for Privacy Preferences Project (P3P) that's being organized by one of the Internet's most venerable standards bodies, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
