Pete Wilson's decision to drop out of the Iowa caucus has rival GOP campaigns dismissing his candidacy, but it may be too early to count him out. West Coast bureau chief Jordan Bonfante notes that, given the $14 million it takes to run in the early round of caucuses and primaries starting with Iowa and New Hampshire, every candidate except Bob Dole will be forced to skip at least one. "You can put a price tag on Wilson's decision: $1.1 million. That's what it would cost to launch an effective grassroots campaign in Iowa, and Wilson is better off putting the money in primary states that rely heavily on one of his key strengths -- media campaigns."
