A strong August jobs report and solid gains in the bond market sent stocks surging in a light trading day before the Labor Day weekend. The Dow Jones industrial average was up sharply at 36.98 points to end at 4,647.54. Nasdaq's composite index was down slightly, 0.64, to close at 1019.47. The Standard and Poor's 500 stocks were up today, 1.96, to end at 563.84. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancers led decliners 1344 to 856 in light trading of 258 million shares. And in London, gold closed at $381.0, down $1.50.
