The PlayStation 2 still isn't supposed to hit the U.S. until October, but talk in Tokyo has it that the fall launch will be followed by an even bigger offensive early next year, aiming to turn the PlayStation 2 into a kind of supercharged TV tuner for cable users.

PlayStation 2 premiered earlier this year in Japan, and the highly anticipated gaming console is expected to be released in the U.S. in October this year. PlayStation 2 boasts a faster processor and more enhanced graphics than its predecessor. It also has ports for connecting to the Internet. The company has not committed to a date for licensing the PlayStation 2 format, but the Wall Street Journal expects it could happen as early as this coming winter.
