In heavy trading today, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 8.45 to close at 4630.63, weighed down in part by the strength of the dollar. At the New York Stock Exchange, advancing issues outnumbered decliners 1,143 to 1,088 with 775 unchanged. The continuing high-tech rally pushed the Nasdaq composite index up 3.49 to 1029.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 was down 0.93 to 559.04. In London, gold closed at 384.50, up $1.00.
