TIME's Martha de la Cal reports that the government of Sao Tome, a tiny two-island nation off the coast of central Africa, wasoverthrown by its own militarybefore dawn today. As crowds took to the streets, the purported leader of the coup, Lieutenant Almeida, went on television claiming he'll "restore order" and "give [Sao Tome] a new image." Though discontent is widespread, the army leaders' primary gripe is that they haven't been paid in six months. So far, de la Cal reports, there's been no bloodshed.
